Slips, trips, and falls are common workplace accidents, resulting in fatalities and injuries that are often preventable. In general, slips, trips, and falls account for the majority of general industry accidents and are the second-leading cause of accidental deaths. Construction slips, trips, and falls make up nearly a third of the industry's reported injuries and 40 percent of construction fatalities.

OSHA requires all walking working surfaces be kept clear of slip, trip, and fall hazards. These regulations, found in 29 CFR 1910 and 29 CFR 1926, are intended to protect against hazards such as wet conditions, uncovered cables, clutter, unguarded openings, slippery surfaces, and unprotected edges. Unstable, poorly placed ladders and misuse of personal fall protection systems also contribute to workplace slips, trips, and falls.
