The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has numerous regulations that govern the preparation and handling of hazardous materials. All employees whose work directly impacts the safe transport of hazardous materials must undergo initial and refresher DOT HAZMAT training.

All hazmat shipments must comply with the DOT's Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR), found in Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). The HMR sets forth standards for classification, packaging, hazard communication, emergency response information, training of HAZMAT employees, transportation, incident reporting, and security. DOT HAZMAT regulations govern the transportation of hazardous materials in interstate, intrastate, and foreign commerce.
